Feb 24th solo practice at PSI post work

Had another long week and it was only Tuesday. I had packed my gear in the morning with the hope of shooting in the PM after work. Leaving the office at 6:30 I was less than energetic...but I drove to the range if for nothing else but a change of pace.

Set up my new target with 17 bulls. Did not even take a practice shot. Just started right in. After about 5 shots I was engaged. Read, don't shoot record shots if you are not engaged.

Spotting scope, target stop, targets worked great. Only problem was it was going below call and I was unable to remember which way up was. (it was a long day) So, I just held high and it bought some better values. It was quite odd toward the end. My hold was AWESOME. I mean I clould hold the bull in the bottom of the 3.6 front sight and squeeze the trigger for a solid 10. 8 out of 17 shots were 10s. One of those out of body moments. How to make that happen again is the question. What was I doing right? Zone and confidence. As soon as I started thinking about how easy it was to shoot tens, I lapsed but worked hard to get it back and I did.

I need to remember if CW is D or L

The top know says <----L----BEI-----R----> except in a circle around the knob.

The windage the knob looks like this <----T----BEI----H---->

FIGURE IT OUT! Not knowing cost me points in the middle of my match! I have made stickers and will now just rely on the sticker to keep my brain out of the weeds.

172
178

I may have scored a few to my advantage but it builds confidence. Counting points is not critical really. And to think that real matches are scored in decimals!

10 meter air, February 15th, 2009 range report

Started by evaluating pellets in the blond 2002ssp. Vogels Match win, Miesterkuglen right behind. Forgot to bring Bimco and the 4.500 Vogels. but, I tested 6 pellets. Vogel 4.495 was the best..good...I have 1,000 of them vs. 500 of 4.500. JSB SCHaK and RWS Meistekugeln were a close second, good, I have 5,000 of each. The old West German H+N Match was a close 3rd. Crossman Copperheads 4th and Gamo Match last. I opted to use up the H+N Match at this point of my training. No reason to ever shoot the Gamo match at paper, it could only hold an 8.

To test I mounted a 8-32 scope that will focus on 10m. And shot 10 pellets one inch below the POA and made a ragged hole. Smaller the ragged hole, the better. Will post image later.

I shot 4 sets of 20 and one was so good I had to use more than 11 bulls to distribute my 20 shots. A good problem to have. I stopped fighting the BIMCO pellets from the day earlier. H+N Match vintage pellets seem to do fine and are on call. Plan to shoot these up and then move to the next vintage pellet and use them up. Good pellets builds confidence! Not sure what to so with the crappy pellets. Here are my 4 strings of 20.

181 0x
179 0x
172 1x
169 0x other shooters arrived, interrupted shooting, changed lights, started shooting powder.

Even the 181 does not get me to my 550 goal. But MUCH better than Saturday. I need to do some conditioning to ensure my scores to not drop as I get tired. Need to get Liz to read the CMP strength training as published on page 15 in October's in On The Mark and get me on a program. Had 1 pinwheel. They sure are beautiful to see.

Mental visioning. Visioning the SCATT files of top shooters seemed to help. A surprise benefit. It was not intentional. Many things run through my head. I did this well! Lesson, replay top shooter's SCATT logs and watch how it should be done and do the same! Too bad SCATTs cost $1,200.

When other trash ran through my mind, bad things happened. Almost like a switch. Sometimes it takes 4 shots to turn the switch off. Regardless of how hard I try, the first unexpected 7 results in a string of them until I get back on track by turning off some mysterious switch. I MUST FIGURE OUT WHERE THIS SWITCH IS! I got it turned off twice but I need to figure out what it is that turns it on in the first place.

Shoot 10s! You can do it! 550 is doable!

Next time:

Test Bimco and 4.500mm Vogels in blond gun.
Bring Anschutz metric allen wrench to tighten up cheek piece.
Number/sequence and date targets when first put up.
Manage time...take note of time taken to shoot 20.
Remember to bring pellet test target.
Ear plugs & vest
At some point I need to test the laminated 2002SSP with the same pellets with the scope on it.
Clock for the indoor range...timer for shooting 20 shots...or 5 x 4.
More targets and push pins.
Make up a label tape to note what is up, what is down on rear sight.
10Ring service...research to fix my sight, Steve Moore, 904 724 7419
Match schedule...what am I working for?
Shooting plan..make copies at work.
